Several Telstra and Optus ‘small cell cabinets’ with cables up an adjacent power pole have been installed on the Eastern Hill to enhance their 5G networks in the area. The Federal Telecommunications Act 1997 allows for these installations with only a notification to Councils that they will be installed. No fees are paid to Councils for the ongoing use and occupation of public land. Had the community been asked we probably would have suggested a less prominent location for this one on Stuart St which is on the way to Jump Rock. On one occasion it was mistaken for Jump Rock with by a young person seen doing somersaults off it followed by a roll down the slope.
Local legend Phil has been kept busy cleaning the graffiti off it since it was installed a few months ago. Perhaps a local artist could design and paint something more interesting and attractive on it’s four sides.
